Perhaps it is only because I'm dieting and more "aware," but it seems the last few days have been insult after insult to obese people! Last night, I was watching an episode of "Manswers" (my Dad calls and asks me to watch... if I didn't love him and understand this gives him something to talk about I WOULD NOT WATCH!) and one of their questions was "Why shouldn't a man hunt for hotties on an empty stomach?" The answer was "because a hungry man will find fatties more attractive" and they paraded out this very large, over-the-top woman as a visual aid. It made me mad! They often use the word "fatty" as if to say any overweight chick is bottom of the barrel pickings and no man should want her! Since my dad doesn't really see me as a "fatty," I guess it doesn't dawn on him that shows like that hurt my feelings.
Then this morning, I was listening to a local radio host reading random emails from listeners. One was from a lady who complained about having to sit on a plane beside an obese woman. Ok... complained is an understatement! She referred to the lady as "Fat Smelly Girl" and her beef was that the obese woman's thigh was so fat that it rubbed up against her thigh and she was basically crowded out of her seat. She was upset that the flight attendant did not acknowledge the problem and offer to move her. What's more, the obese passenger asked this B**** what there was to do in Greensboro (where they were landing) and she replied, "L.A. Weightloss!" By this time, the radio staff were completely on the side of the complaining passenger and said we should demand that all fat people have to buy two or three or however many seats would be required for us to sit in. THEN... they have someone from the airlines call in and start complaining about what a problem it is for flight attendants to try and accomodate obese people and basically said attendants in general hate to see them coming, hate dealing with them, and wish they wouldn't fly, period! I was FURIOUS! It wasn't approached as a "here's a sensitive issue... how can we deal with it sensitively"... it was all-out, no holds barred, attack fat people for flying hour.
Just had to vent that.
