6 mph

I walked tonight and came it at 6 miles completed in 59 minutes!!  that is 6 mph folks.  I doubt I could keep it up all day--at least not yet--but I am really moving on!

IM WALKING AS FAST AS I CAN

For those of us who decided to incorporate walking into our fitness/diet programs, here are a few things I am trying to get as most out of each work out as possible: Many people do not realize this but around the world, walking is the number one sport of all--and yes, it can be a sport.  Distance walkers are usually referred to as hikers especially if they often go up mountains or through forests or other areas with no roads or hard to get to roads  (but they also hike on roads) there are strollers who just slowly cruise neighborhoods or...

MY DIET LIFESTYLE IN ACTION

I posted this under the Big Loser challenge but also will post it here --cut  and paste is about all I have time for today: Yesterday, after a pretty good work out I decided to get off the diet for the rest of the evening. for those who do not know--I low carb so what I am about to say is low carb heresy. I have to make this diet work for life and for MY LIFE and to that end, I plan on cheating. "Cept it is not cheating, instead I am negotiating...

LIVING ON NOT GETTING ON A DIET

Okay today I actually got on the scale (though with much trepidation) I'm at a good solid 192. If you are curious of what that means it means when I got on my scale the balance was directly at the halfway point in balance and did not clang against the top (meaning I was a bit lighter and would need to move a marker) or the bottom (which means I was a bit heavier and so, also needed to move a marker) I I am taking an approach that is very different from any other time I have dieted--I am examining...

WHEN YOUR BODY CHEATS

This subject really fascinates me.  Not only because it shows our bodies are almost sentient without our consent, but because I have seen this played out soooo many times, both by observing my own body and by watching how others react or act on diets. The most important TAKEAWAYS: 1. Your body has a different agenda than you do. 2. Your brain controls your outside behavior BUT is continually subject  influence by what the inside also dictates.  In short, you only have control over your body ONLY so much as you are able to manage the signals from the inside.  BRAIN POWER.  We...

FOOD GAUNTLET LOCATIONS CONTINUED

ITS A PARTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!   Yeah.  We know.  Location and OCCASION go hand in hand. Whether it's your birthday or someone else's, or you re on business, or vacation, or its a bridal or baby shower or your best buds are all here, or its the SUPER BOWL--there will ALWAYS  be a reason and your brain is ready for you on this one: 1.  The occasion is soooo special-your baby only turns this age ONCE....promotions are meant to be celebrated...how can you be in France and NOT eat? It's a cocktail party and you are expected to eat....Just this once...Just that once... It is ALWAYS...

THE FOOD GAUNTLET MINIMIZING DIET DAMAGE

Note I did not say--preventing diet damage.  This is because, as I've written before--unless you are practicing to become a food nun or monk--cheating will happen. If not on this particular diet cycle then at some point--and remember diets are really for life, not just to get some weight off .   (because if you do not maintain through diet, back up the scale you WILL go) So this then is to list a few of the many pitfalls of our diets, no matter WHO we are, how long we have been at it or what diet we are on--these are...

GOT IT ZIPPPED

Okay--have not been blogging in a while and have several confessions to make... I stopped weighing myself. Once I saw that the scale was at 193.5 I stopped weighing myself to gauge progress and started trying on my old skirts (skirting myself)  This is because after the last up and down fiasco, I am just not in that kind of mood for my scale to play with me I may not have been blogging but I am not slacking either!  I joined a walking club and have been putting in some pretty good mileage...

THE BUZZ ABOUT PAULA DEEN AND DIETING FOOD

I guess those of us who blog or read the news on line already know the story about Paula Deen (star cook on the Food Network) who has recently been blasted about cooking unhealthy food, then being diagnosed with Type II diabetes then keeping that diagnosis a secret for 3 years then finally, going public about her illness after she was asked  to be a spokes person for a Big Pharm company that makes diabetic medication. The buzz has been loud and long with a lot of people "weighing" in so to speak.  Righteous Indignation--this is from the contingency  that feels...

ANOTHER KEEPER

" My daughter has a Kit Kat bar, in the cupboard. shes been working on it for awhile lol. And with all the pain I'm going through I could have easily ate it. But instead I walked up to the Cupboard Looked at it. and said " I Win!!" and walked away.  things will get easier with time." posted by Robz251127

JUST REMEMBER

"...the only way you'll never lose weight is if you stop trying..." excerpt from "finally thin!" by Kim Bensen who between 10/02/2001 and 10/02/2003 lost 206 lbs --and kept it off--following Weight Watchers--this--after a life time of battling her weight and binging.

lactic acid and weight gain adjunct to phantom pound post

I can only write so much on a post before it is too much to put down... Another factor is Lactic Acid build up.  You know that burning feeling you get when you exercise strenuously?  That is lactic acid--it is what your muscles release if they feel they are required to do a lot really quickly or repeatedly.  Well, that has to be flushed away... your body sends fluid there to get rid of lactic acid as the muscles release it--this is also why, as your body is redistributing weight after work outs--you may experience...

PHANTOM POUNDS WHEN WEIGHT APPEARS OUT OF NOWHERE

Anyone and everyone who diets WILL experience this at some point or other.  You are plugging along on your diet...eating the right foods, in the right amounts...exercising....drinking plenty of water...losing swimmingly then WHAM! you get hit with a pound or 3 or 5 in ONE day.  What in the heck is going on? A lot.  As dieters, it's time for us to put certain things into perspective.  (This goes for me too)    Now..if you have NOT  been overeating or cheating, there may be many reasons for the weight gain--but the first thing ALL of us need to know is that EVERYONE's...

PUTTING ON THE GREY SILK SKIRT jan 18 2012

I'm not going to do some sort of stall or lead in--the scales still says 195.5--damn it to hell and back. I can get the skirt on.  I can get it ALL the way on.  I cannot fasten it.  The gap to completely close is 5 inches. But even if I closed it, I could not walk in it--the side seams are stretched to the breaking point.  There are about 6 lines where the fabric is bunched due to the size of my thighs.  I pretty much have to have 38 inch hips to get into this skirt and my thighs will/should be...

THE SKIRTS

Invariably, when a person low carbs, they find that sometimes progress is not measured on the scale but in the closet. After years of off and on dieting (successful ONLY in that I get down to a pretty nice size 8-10 within 3-5 months , UNSUCCESSFUL in that I never STAY at the size for over 6 months at a time--then I zoom back up to the size I was and almost gain (to the ounce) that 10 extra bonehead pounds for not getting back on the diet. That's it. You might wonder how if that is the case, I can go...

WHAT I FORGOT ABOUT LACTIC ACID VS WEIGHT GAIN

When I am not online chances are great I am either doing ordinary things, or researching or..reading my old journals.  I came across a notation when I had a weight fluctuation that may explain why I am seeing a 1/2 pound gain.  It holds especially true because I gave myself a pretty brutal workout on my bike last night and stupidly, again this morning--I went between 16.5-19.0 mph for 30 minutes--hill setting (recumbent bike)  that is a true thigh and hip BURN--which may seem good until you remember the rules concerning NOT muscle failure but lactic acid build up: "Here is...

Set back January 17 2012

After about 13 days of steady loss (about 1/2 lb per day)  I had a set back this morning.  Got up and weighed and was at 195.5.  It could be a regain of 1/2 pound. It could be that I am retaining fluid.  I reexamined my diet and found that I had started to eat legumes.  (kidney beans in chili I made)  I did not eat many and the reason I did so was because I am trying to transition to a diet more like the South Beach diet which appears to offer a more reasonable lifestyle approach to low...

IF I BUY ANOTHER PAIR OF KITTEN HEELED SLING BACK BLACK SHOES

PLEASE.  Feel free to virtually KICK me. Did I mention I love fashion?  I know its superficial which is why I love it. Everything cannot be deep and meaningful.  :)   I know--a lot of you are thinking you love fashion too.  Okay--then you can understand why I would like a swift kick in my computered butt if I don't stop purchasing black shoes--and not just any black shoes--black ones--in either patent leather or regular leather or suede with kitten heels --all sling backs--. I could have named this post:  What are you planning to do with your old clothes once you...

2004 the grand tour circuit in europe meets the american dieter

Ever diet on a vacation? It sucks a big one.  In fact, I would strongly suggest (because I never learn) to diet BEFORE your trip and get down to some obscene size really low just so you can eat your way back)  WHO goes to Paris and only tries to eat meat, ignoring the baguettes, and cream sauces and pates?  Not I--By the time I arrived in the Netherlands--diet what? And I stayed off the diet the entire time I was in Europe (about 3 weeks) by the time I came back, I had gone from around 164 (never negate or...

The bee flew through 2002 but nose dived in 2003

In 2002, I occasionally played around with the induction plan on Atkins.  I was still trying to get down to 147.  It was not to be, but in 202 I did not know that.  By the Spring of 2002 my garden was in and by the fall, I had pretty much did all I set out to do on my land with the exception of creating one last room, putting up the last  of my fencing and 3 of the 6 arbors and had my inside the way I wanted it (ignoring the attic bathroom, the basement and the garage). ...

WHY A SKINNY PERSON RETURNS TO FAT LAND

This is for anyone who has dieted more than twice.  It is my own self revelation and has to do with my journey--but you might read it and agree too.  I'm really interested to know other takes on this.  These are mine--I'm not trying to be preachy or even suggest I have the "answers" or know what is right--this is just what came to me as I began the somewhat interesting yet painful journey of re-reading my notes since 1997 on dieting and exercise and how when I am doing them--I often am not really living in the real world...

My journey from 2000-2001

2001--the year of home renovation.  someone should make a calorie burner counter that considers the amount burned when painting say, an 8X10 room, or refinishing a wood floor in same size room , or  laying tile including the subfloor and hardibacker boards--how about tearing out a a bathroom and dragging radiators out--what is the calorie burn on that?  Then there is all the hauling of soil and mulch and laying flagstones, and tiling a porch (tiling craze--wanted an Italian veranda--don't ask) or tearing out miles of grody carpet and then pulling each and every little carpet tack and staple with...

My diet prep--or cooking 104 meals in 2 days

I begin my diet prep with cooking most of the foods I plan to eat within the next 14 days--that is at least 52 meals.  I also have to cook for my daughter or else she will eat up my meals--so that is around 52 more.  I do have make adjustments for her not because of my diet--but because she does not like onions or peppers or anything like that in her food. I start my prep by thinking of the meals I want to eat.  Since I am a mom with 5 kids, I am used to cooking for a...

Getting a new diet paradigm

If you are in the corporate world, you know all about the buzz word : paradigm or thinking out of the box--a paradigm is just the way we do things and when we do things if we do them long enough a certain way--we start thinking that is the ONLY way. when we do that, we are not open to new ideas or ways of doing things because we believe only our way is effective and right. I'll say it first:  THERE ARE ALL KINDS OF WAYS TO LOSE WEIGHT AND A LOT OF THEM WORK. I'll say this first too:  IF YOU...

I can eat two plates of Pasta with meat sauce on my low carb diet, can you

Heh, Heh--did that get your attention? This post should not be that long.  Are you wanting to know what diet I am on?  Or maybe you want to know HOW can this be?  Simple. Even if you are on Atkins or Protein Power Plan this will be okay (though NEVER to the diet orthodoxy)  I use Dreamfields pasta.  I eat a cup a day usually at lunch and I am sure to eat it with some protein.  I LIMIT the loss to one cup a day and no more than twice a week.  At most I get a weight stall at...

WHY CHEATING OR BINGING IS BETTER FOR YOUR DIET THAN SKIPPING MEALS

Our bodies are at war fellow dieters. Make no mistake.  The war is not with food.  The war (as our bodies may perceive it) is with some unseen force that makes them give up their most prize possession:  OUR FAT. Try to think of our diets from the perspective of money. Fat is money.  ...and your belly, hibs, thighs, buttocks, knees, face, and arms are BANKS.  A diet keeps withdrawing money.  Some diets make a virtual "run" on the fat bank and this "war" is not just a one time thing it  IS for the rest  of our lives and for...

IF EVERYONE IS ON THE INSULIN PATHWAY WHY ISN'T EVERYONE STORING FAT

he answer is actually pretty simple and helps to explain why some people are skinny all the time, some are genetically predisposed to fat and some can eat almost anything and still not gain or even cannot maintain a healthy weight. BASAL METABOLISM--we all have one--it is how much our body BURNS in energy just to burp, sneeze, , giggle, , beat the heart, breathe the air, think--in other words, the rate of  all our bodies when it is doing NOTHING except existing. Closely related to that is our "resting metabolism"  it is our bodies...

WHY and HOW A 1 HOUR MINI BINGE CAN WORK ON A LOW CARB DIET

Remember in the first post I said you had two pathways and explained about how long it takes for each to work? "It takes 3 days to go from a normal fat storing state (INSULIN pathway) to a fat burning state." "It takes about 1.5  hours to go from a fat burning state (GLUCAGON PATHWAY) back to a normal fat storing state. The cheat is simple--once you are well and truly into Ketosis (fat burning) it will take about 1.5 hours for your body to return to a fat storing state--you do the cheat in the WINDOW of an hour--your body is still...

THE LOW CARB CHEATS--PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK

Okay.  I have been battling with the burden of whether revealing the cheats are a good idea.  Most people on low carb diets are either bingers OR carb addicts--or both.  If you have a hankering for a high carb food that leads you to overeat, or to crave a food to distraction--chances are high you are an addict--you may even be slightly allergic to what you crave--like chocolate, or the gluten in wheat and flour (pasta and bread)  at low levels the signals to your brain do not indicate distress but slight stimulation--but it IS a signal that the food...

CHEATING ON A LOW CARB DIET IS NOT LIKE CHEATING ON A LOW FAT OR LOW CALORIE DIET

If you read my posts about low carb then you know that it works based on revving up a certain chemical mix in your metabolism called the Glucagon pathway.  I also discussed another pathway called the Insulin pathway. The Insulin pathway is activated anytime sugar is on the scene in significants amount or for a long period of time. Candy, potato chips, apples, oranges, bananas, white flour,  rice, pasta, bread, cake, cookies and many prepared foods are simply fat bombs waiting to explode. To your body--anything that can be broken down in about an hour and a half is really pure sugar.  IN fact,...

IF YOU ARE THINKING OF TRYING A LOW CARB DIET--WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

There are many low carb diets on the market and many more that claim they are not low carb but really are.  What Low Carb dieters need to know is that regardless if you are on Atkins, or South Beach,Paleo or the Curves, or fatloss4idiots, or any other diet which limits your intake of flour, potatoes, sugar, rice and pasta-- while promoting significant amounts of protein--you are on some form of low carb diet. THERE ARE ALL KINDS OF WAYS TO LOSE WEIGHT and this is not a blog about the pros and cons of each diet . This is being...

The Queenbee's epic diet journey

I figured I'd start out with an outrageous title that would just put me and my new diet out there. WHY?  I'm thinking more accountability might make a difference.  Then again, maybe  not--but surely there is something useful in our journey's eh? The other day, I started trying to get back on the wagon and at the same time tried to recount how many times I had got off that same wagon.  For me, the wagon is my carb cravings.  First I better point out that I am a...
