Biggest Loser Recap

SPOILER ALERT: If you read to the end, you will know who went home on this week's BL.

It took me a while to get into this season's Biggest Loser. But after last night's episode, I'm pumped!

Last night's episode was awesome! It was also a hugeeee tearfest for me haha.

So, the first challenge was much like a game of Jeopardy. The players had to answer questions about what food qualities and the components of healthy eating. I have to say, I didn't know a single answer.

The next challenge was a little more my style. Guest chef Curtis Stone was on and the contestants worked in teams to make a healthy meal consisting of entree, appetizer and dessert for him and Alison Sweeney. Some of the meals looked absolutely delicious, including an orange-glazed salmon cooked up by Ashley and Sherry on the black team. The winning team (blue or black) recieved a 5 lb. advantage at the weigh in.

The black team won, and all of the black team was extremely excited as they haven't won many challenges lately. Things were starting to look up for the black team, and they finished out the week's workouts with confidence that they wouldn't have to send someone home at the weigh in.

But Bob wasn't going to let that happen. The blue team worked suppppppper hard during last chance workout because they weren't going to let the black team win.

During the weigh in, most of the black team did pretty well-Sam lost 8 lbs., a 4 lb. improvement from last week which left him disappointed. Sherry and Ashley both continue to lose decent numbers and Drea lost 5 lbs (she was a little sad because she always only loses 5 or 7 lbs.) Stephanie only lost 2 lbs., which left her upset as she is putting in the effort but not seeing a great return.

Then the black team weighed in. Before anyone got on the scale, Alison told the Blue team that in order to beat the black team, each team member needed to lose 8 lbs. And amazingly, each and every team member did.

Some more so than others. One of the more emotional moments was when Koli broke 300 lbs and Sam rushed to the stage, teary-eyed to hug his cousin (whewwwwww was I crying during this part). Sam exclaimed that "It's not about black about blue, this is what it's about!"

Another blue team emotional weigh in moment was when Michael stepped on the scale, after being absent the week visiting his sick grandmother. When Michael got back, he told his teammates that he did find the time to exercise twice a day while he was away, but I don't think anyone was really sure of what he really did when he was away.

Michael lost 11 lbs. this week.

The blue team won, and a very sad black team headed to the elimination room.

While Ashley and Sherry pleaded to stay on the ranch and stay together, in the end it was Sherry who was sent home.

And wowwwwwwwie did she look GREAT when they showed her at home!Total, Sherry lost about 80 lbs.  Her goal is to get down to what she weighed at her wedding by the finale.

What did YOU think of this week's episode?

Does milk really do a body good?

On this week's Biggest Loser, Jillian conducts one of her usual blatant advertisements, this time for fat-free milk.

While Jillian is describing all the reasons someone who is working out should drink milk she says the calcium and protein are the building blocks to a leaner body.

I've always thought that drinking milk would work against my weight loss efforts, as I've always been told that dairy can add unecessary calories and carbs to my diet.

So, I did a little investigating, and here is what I found:

According to this article from e How, the dairy industry has published reports that say that individuals who consume milk generally weigh less and have an easier time losing weight (granted these are reports FROM the dairy industry).

Other studies show that milk can cause weight gain and show no correlation between weight loss and consumption of dairy products.

On the Lose Weight Diet blog, the author disputes the theory that milk has anything to do with weight loss, and says that any food, consumed within a reduced calorie diet, could be considered to be a part of a successful weight loss effort.

So does milk help you lose weight or not? The answer doesn't seem so clear. But what is known is that milk does provide some valuable nutrients that don't hurt the body. So if it's a choice between a glass of milk and a bar of chocolate, I'd say the milk would be more likely to help you lose weight ;)
