If any of you are regular "Today Show" followers like me, you will have caught this morning's segment, "Why Diets Fail."
Personally, I think we know why SOME diets fail, but I don't think it's safe to assume ALL diets fail, because if they have the power to get someone motivated to lose the weight, then they are not failures at all.
SOME diets do fail, however, in fact most, for a few basic reasons that were outlined in the segment.
The first reason diets fail, according to the segment, is because people aren't fully committed. Sometimes, we get excited and wrapped up in the idea of the diet and idea of losing weight, but our enthusiasm doesn't carry through.
The second reason diets fail is because people expect miracles. Whenever you start a diet or weight loss regimen, you have to be patient. You will NOT wake up the next day and see the weight vanish from your bones. You need to keep at it to see actual results.
The final reason they gave for diets failing was that people cannot forgive themselves for slipping up. For instance, if you were in the middle of your diet and you slipped and ate a big piece of chocolate cake for dessert. At that point you figure you've blown your diet and you just give up.
(Joy Bauer assured everyone that one big piece of cake never made a person gain weight as long as they hopped back on the wagon and continued their efforts afterwards). I will post the link to the segment as soon as it's available, but...
What do YOU think? DO diets fail? If so, WHY?
