How to maintain your weight on vacation

'Tis the season for beaches and bikinis and summer vacations.

But when you're on a weight loss path, the thought of going away and possibly being separated from the weight loss routine you've finally sunken into can be somewhat freighting. Still, there are a few ways you can continue to lose weight away from your natural habitat.

Washington Post blogger Jennifer LaRue Huget is planning a trip to Italy and asked her readers for some advice on how to maintain weight loss on vacation.

One tip a reader had was to drink sparkling water with meals. The reader explained that drinking sparkling water makes them feel fuller and therefore makes them eat less.

Another reader said that depending on where you take your vacation, some cultures tend to be more into fruits and vegetables than more fatty foods. If you eat the way the culture eats, in these circumstances, you will probably consume healthier food than you would even at home.

If all else fails, you could go to a grocery store nearby, purchase a bunch of healthy food, and prepare your own meals at your hotel room before going out for the day. You can eat breakfast in your room, pack a lunch to bring with you. The benefit of this is that it not only helps you lose weight, but it also helps you not burn cash.

I once took a long weekend trip to Newport, RI and was on a very strict budget. So, I packed a cooler full of a loaf of wheat bread, all natural peanut butter, sugar-free jelly, bananas, water, Chex Mix and some chocolate (I needed a treat!) for me and my guest, and we hardly ate out all weekend!

The hardest thing about losing weight on vacations is the temptations. But if you learn how to look past the moment and on to the long-lasting effects, you will see those vacation indulgences may not be worth it.

What do YOU think? Any tips for losing weight on vacation?
