Do targeted obesity programs work?

Many schools across the country have changed their curriculum to include specialized programs that focus on childhood obesity and how to avoid it.

But a new study has found that programs like these do not seem to be helping with early onset obesity. The study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine and found that the specialized obesity programs had no effect on the weight loss of most of the middle school students who participated.

Forty two schools were monitored over a period of three years. The programs included having healthier lunch programs, more stimulating physical education programs, and education programs about healthy lifestyle choices and nutritious meals.

Study conductors apparently were not expecting the results they saw ("stunned" was the word used in the article), but the results, they said, were fairly similar across the board.

Check out this article to learn more about the study.

What do YOU think? Can targeted obesity programs make a difference in middle school students' habits?

I see it everyday at school. The kids get a healthy lunch and throw it away but the pizza, fries and tater tots are all gone. Does a healthy program work no. I think the cafeteria needs to serve healthier food. At my school the kids are given cookies that are enriched for breakfast, honey buns enriched for breakfast just because it is enriched does not make it healthy. We as adults need to model healthy food and the right way to eat and serve the healthy food.

Keeping out kids healthy is only about 50% what happens at school. There needs to be a big reform in the school systems, as well as a huge reform in the homes. Parents are not educated in healthy lifestyles, and it does not matter if the schools are doing what they should, if the kid goes home to a house full of junk food that is what they are going to eat. There needs to be a push in education for parents on healthy living. Schools need to offer programs to teach parents about food and exercise, and it should be part of the school counselors job to have one on one sit downs with parents of children who are showing signs of obesity.
