Last week, I blogged about whether or not drinking water with meals fills you up. It seems I'm blogging quite a bit about water and weight loss lately, but its a topic that probably runs through most of our brains often: does drinking more water help you lose weight?
What I determined in my last blog entry is that drinking water during meals can fill you up faster and therefore help you to consume fewer calories, but other than filling up on water instead of food, can drinking more water actually assist in weight loss?
According to Time magazine, it can. Time ran this article today that said that a Virginia Tech randomized study examined several dieters-some who are accustomed to drinking at least two 8 oz. glasses of water per day and some who drank less water. The dieters who drank at least 16 oz. of water per day lost at least 5 more pounds than those who had not, over the course of 12 weeks.
Furthermore, the study also examined a group of dieters who were instructed to drink water with every meal and a group of dieters who were not and found that the group who did drink water with every meal tended to lose more weight.
What about juices or sodas? Nope, they don't work the same. Water has a very particular power that quenches you and satisfies your need for hydration without the high calories found in most beverages.
While the article does explain that the test subjects who drank more water lost more weight, the article says there is still little evidence that explains how much water should be drank.
