Are You Drinking Enough



Now that the weather in beginning to cool off some of us may find it difficult to keep drinking enough water.  I know that it’s recommended that we all drink 8 glasses of water a day but I’m not so naïve as to think that it’s the correct amount for everyone.  I know when I’m drinking the right amount for me because I feel better and I start getting compliments on my skin.  For me it’s around 80 ounces a day, which is a little less than 2.5 liters.  This is something you might want to discuss with your doctor.  Depending on various health conditions and medications you might be taking.  I know there are medications that suggest you drink it with a full glass of water and I know there are health conditions where water is limited.  If you’re an average healthy adult I would think that drinking 8 glasses of water should be sufficient.  Keep in mind that when you exercise and sweat that is extra water you’ll need to replace.
                                                                                        
There are so many websites about this subject, but I really think it comes down to basic common sense.  Let’s look at this logically.  We are mostly comprised of water.  As part of our body’s natural function we expel water.  When we breath, move, eat and sleep we are using water it just makes sense that it would have to be replaced.  Not drinking enough water is like having a machine and not using enough oil to lubricate the parts.

How do you know when to drink water?  That is really a big problem.  We don’t always realize we’re thirsty.  It seems like a contradiction doesn’t it?  After all if this is something our body needs wouldn’t we crave water?  The truth is we might not always recognize thirst for what it is.  Think of all the car trips or times when you were thirsty but you denied yourself from drinking.  You might have been in a situation where there wasn’t a bathroom close at hand, or you might have been busy working on a project and didn’t want to stop to get something to drink.  After years of ignoring that thirst instinct it’s become hard to always recognize it for what it is.  That is one of the reasons that diet specialists will suggest that if you think you’re hungry when you know you shouldn’t be, try drinking a glass of water.  Chances are pretty good you may be thirsty.  I don’t know if this has ever happened to you but there have been times when I’ve poured myself a glass of water to only down it in a matter of seconds and then think, I didn’t even realize I was that thirsty and immediately poured myself another glass to take with me.
                                                                                                             
In our quest to stay hydrated you also have to realize that there are drinks and foods that work as natural diuretics.  Caffeine is a diuretic and that is why many diets suggest you switch to decaffeinated coffee, tea or soda.  Some fruits that would be on that list are pineapple, lemon, grapes, watermelon and strawberries.  Vegetables that can have a diuretic effect are artichokes, asparagus, beets, green beans, onion, leeks and pumpkin.  There are even herbs that work that way, one in particular is dandelion.  I wanted to be sure to mention dandelion because I know that is an ingredient in some weight loss teas.  You think you’re losing fat when you’re really losing water.  I’m not saying that these foods are bad for you on the contrary they are great sources of vitamins and fiber, I just want you to be aware that we need to replenish ourselves with water.
I did find an article saying that drinking water is hyped up and that we really don’t need to drink as much as many experts say we do.  I was only able to find one article saying that, I was able to find many articles suggested that the average adult strive for 8 glasses a day.  My suggestion would be drink the water and see how you feel.  I feel better and my body works better when I’m properly hydrated.  That’s pretty good motivation right there.

Thanks for the reminder - I'm a coffee-a-holic - and have cut way down on the caffeine - and now I'm making myself have a big glass of water in between each cup of coffee.

I decided to also make myself have a glass of water before I take a second helping of dinner.
