Good Posture

Having good posture is slenderizing.  Knowing that you can look slimmer just by standing tall is great incentive.  Standing tall gives you an aura of confidence.  It not  only creates a sense of power within but it also will reflect on how others perceive you.   A recent study found that standing tall increases testosterone and decreases cortisol.  Remember cortisol is that hormone that makes it even harder to lose weight! When a person feels shy they tend to look down and slouch, in this way minimizing themselves.   Which way would you like to be perceived?

Bad posture goes deeper than how your perceived, there are also health consequences.   When you body is out of alignment for long periods of time, you place excess pressure on joints and disks.  This causes an overgrowth of cartilage lining the joints and can lead to compressed nerves, resulting in pain and numbness in your arms and legs.   Slouching can lead to headaches from upper body tension.  It can also lead to constipation from the intestinal tract being constricted.  By slumping you can also reduce your lung capacity by 30 percent!

When your standing with good posture your ears should be over your shoulders, not falling forwards or back.  Shoulders should be level not one higher than the other.  Hips should be level and kneecaps should point forward and not rotate inward.  Toes should be pointing straight ahead or turned out slightly.

If you've looked at your reflection and aren't pleased don't worry.  There are things you can do.  Yoga and Pilates both promote good posture and strengthen the muscles used to hold ourselves up tall.  I also found this exercise on the National Osterposis Foundation website.

Corner stretch

Stand in the corner of a room with your arms extended to the walls at shoulder level.
Step one foot forward, letting that knee bend.
Lean onto the front leg, bringing your head and chest toward the corner.
    Hold for 20-30 seconds.
Stand up straight and switch feet.
Repeat it on the other side.
Do 2 on each side, 3 times per week.

Benefit: Stretches shoulders, flattens upper back. Improves rounded shoulders.

I also found a few more exercises that I think you'll find helpful.  3 Exercises to Improve Your Posture by Better Homes and Gardens.   Just think of how great you'll look in your holiday pictures standing tall.
