Dance Your Ass Off

It takes a lot to get me excited about a television show. Wait, actually, I take that back, judging by the fact that I've been excited by some of the most terrible television shows to make it to primetime. But I am EXTREMELY excited about a new show on Oxygen called Dance Your Ass Off. The Oxygen Network is a buried little secret amongst the big, bad tv channels, but if you watch it at the right time, you may just find a treasure like this show. Essentially, it is Dancing with the Stars with a group of overweight contestants. In the first episode,...

Healthy attitude, healthy life

One of my favorite sayings of all time is "change your image, change your life," and I thought perhaps, in a similar fashion, I thought this phrase could be flipped around a little to reflect the following article: http://www.edmontonjournal.com/Health/Healthy+weight+loss+starts+ends+with+healthy+attitude/1743434/story.html I want to say I love, love, LOVE this article (note, I have to say love three times when I really really like something.) I love it for a few reasons. First, I love it because the situation the journalist is describing is one I was actually in this past weekend as I attempted to cover a high school graduation and stupidly forgot...

The No S Diet

I won't claim to know much about this diet because honestly  I don't. By the very nature of the diet's Web site, www.nosdiet.com, you can see that not much information is even available. Essentially, it appears that the diet creator believes that no snacks, no sweets and no seconds are the key to weight loss success. Well, I'd like to dispute the three foundational points of this diet, even though that is all I know about the diet itself. Without snacks I would be hungry all day long. Without sweets I know I would be left with endless cravings. Without seconds-well, I guess...

Goodbye, Michael Jackson

I don't think, no matter where you live in the world, you will be able to turn on a television or radio station without hearing tributes to Michael Jackson today. While the autopsy is scheduled to be conducted today, the results to be released later, many of us throughout the world are left with countless questions. And, as I'm sure many of you buddies have admired Jackson over the years, I would like to provide a forum for you to talk about the influence Jackson has had on your personal lives. What was your favorite Michael Jackson song? Are there any memories that...

The Burrito Diet

Now here’s my kind of diet, and it’s one you don’t hear of every day. Author and creator of the Burrito Diet Matt Lisk, at one point in time, was in the peak of his health, he said, weighing in at about 180 lbs with only 6 percent of his body being fat. “I was in the shape that every person wants to be in,” he remembers. But then, like many of us, Lisk slipped into the stresses of life and lost control of his eating. “The weight started to slowly creep back on top the point where I ended up at about...

Weight Loss Support in the News

First, I would like to re-link to a post I wrote earlier this week that may have been buried in other posts that I think many of you buddies with pets would get a kick out of: http://weightlossbuddy.com/blogs/weightlossbuddy/archive/2009/06/19/diets-for-the-dogs.aspx It's about a new weight loss challenge Purina has launched for cats and dogs, who, what do ya know, are being criticized for being overweight just like us humans. Next, I want to talk about a link I posted to WLB's Twitter, MySpace and Facebook pages, because it describes exactly what we do. http://www.facebook.com/ext/share.php?sid=111210276340&h=LdBca&u=_jnrj&ref=mf Essentially, this article says that by gaining support, it makes it much...

Sore Losers

I wanted to bring this article to my buddies' attention and see what you guys think. http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/stories/2009/06/21/gym_contest.html Basically, the article is about a competition at Gold's Gym based heavily on the Biggest Loser television show, which, for those of you who don't know, inspires its contestants to lose significant amounts of weight through vigorous exercise and healthy eating. The article features two contestants of the Gold's competition who said they lost a great deal of weight for the competition, competing against one another and others in the gym for a prize check of about $1,000. After the competition had ended, though, they did not...

Diets for the Dogs

I thought I would share the following with you buddies so that you know you are not alone, and even man's best friend could drop a few pounds. Dr. Grace Long is a veterinarian and director of veterinary technical marketing for Nestle Purina, the popular dog and cat chow maker, out of St. Louis, MO. She is involved with a new challenge that asks veterinary clinics to encourage their patients, both cats and dogs to lose weight. According to Long, about 40% of cats and dogs are overweight, which can lead to a plethora of problems for your pets. "It's not recent,...

The Fat Truth

The New York Times offers some hope today, telling us the concept that we should all be able to lose weight with just diet and exercise is a myth. Check that out here: http://health.nytimes.com/ref/health/healthguide/esn-obesity-ess.html In case you're not in the mood for reading at the moment, this article talks about science vs. what you hear from your friends, on the tv and at the gym about weight loss. Some people, not all people but some, are overweight because it's simply in their DNA. It also calls the concept of the nation being overweight because of our love of fast food  a "scapegoat" and...

Jon and Kate-and when did she get so skinny!?

If there's one thing I love more than food, its gossip. My friends and fiance constantly tell me I gossip too much and that its not nice to dwell on others' misfortune. I don't really see it that way, but whatever. If you are like me and love gossip, you probably don't only love gossip that applies to your own lives, but celebrity gossip as well. And if you're into celebrity gossip, you probably known about the hype that is surrounding Jon and Kate Gosselin. For the purposes of WLB, I don't really want to gossip about their marriage, or who cheated on...

Taking it One Step Further

Parking lots. I wish everything was purchaseable through a drive-thru so that I never had to get out of my car. Unfortunately, that is an impossibility-at least for now. I don't know about you, but I am the kind of person who NEEDS to park in the closest spot. I hate hate hate the concept of having to park my car, walk to the store, walk to the item I need, walk to the checkout counter, walk back to my car and eventually, walk from my car to the front door. Walk walk walk walk. This is very lazy of me, I know,...

Love your Buddy

I like to think of this post as not bragging about ourselves, but acknowledging our great qualities and the good things we do for people. I know a few of you have written posts about how you're having some trouble with the site and the message boards, but I want to assure you that if you have taken all the measures on your end, i.e., cleaned your browser of cookies, etc., then our end is constantly working to ensure that you have the best experience whenever you log on to our site. Now let's talk about the good things Weight Loss Buddy...

The Year of Fat

As I was trying to squeeze into one of my favorite pairs of white pants from last year-and let me start by saying yes, they did fit, but no, not as well as last year-it occurred to me that this is the Year of Fat. What I mean is, everyone I know has gotten fatter this year. I personally don't look at them and see that they have gotten fat, but I don't know a single person who hasn't said that they are fatter this year than they were last year. In my own closet, it appears that my YOF did not...

Training, Personally

Sometimes I have to hold myself back from writing about personal conversations involving weight loss on this blog. But a conversation I had today with B (hope she's not reading this ;) ) has got me thinking, and I think it's a good conversation-starter between me and my buddies. B told me that she had heard from a friend all the benefits of her personal trainer and has decided to enlist her own, personal, personal trainer. The personal trainer she plans to hire will give her two free sessions, with each additional session costing $35 per hour, IF she enlists a couple...

Drinking Fewer Calories with your Beer

Drinking a cold beer on a hot summer day may be a regularity of your past. But now that you are on a strict weight loss plan, drinking even one single beer may seem like way too many calories for one bottled beverage. I know that when it comes to the cold drinks in the heat, I personally prefer a frozen margarita-one of which can contain over 800 calories (depending on the size of the glass). So what do we do? How do we keep our figure in shape by kicking back a cold one? Well, there are a few low-calories beers...

Motivation

We all have our reasons to want to lose weight. His wife and child are his: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-health-weight-loss-03-jun03,0,6741278.story What is your motivation?

Boot Camp

Let's talk about boot camps. I don't want to tell you about boot camps, because frankly, I don't know anything about boot camps. But I am interested in knowing more (see, this blog not only allows me to tell you things, but to learn things too). I remember getting something in the mail about a weight loss boot camp-I don't know much about the stipulations other than that it is 5 days a week for one hour a day for 6 weeks (I think), and that I got a coupon for $20 off. Now, I didn't look into it much, but I'm...
