Snacks for the Gym!

I don't like to eat anything at the gym because if I eat at all an hour before I workout because I get cramps. But some people are just the opposite and need to eat before working out. For those people are some healthier snacks for the gym. My personal favorite from this list is a glass of chocolate milk. It's tasty, chocolatey (which makes for the best treat) and has about 17 grams of protein. Eggs are another great one-especially if you only eat the yolks, with 19 grams of protein. A scoop of whey protein in your water can also give you a...

Biggest Loser Recap! 4/27

SPOILER ALERT: If you read to the end of this post, you will know who went home on this week’s BL.   Man, last night’s episode was a tearjerker!   What got me the most was the inspiration spewing from the contestants on to the people they met while on a health-conscious tour of Texas.   For those who missed it, last night’s episode was all about the contestants visiting Texas-the most obese state in the United States.   The contestants started out on local radio stations, talking to callers and giving advice to the state-at-large about how important it is to lose weight and maintain a...

What Does Motivation Have to Do With It?

Can you lose weight if you're not motivated? The short answer is no. The longer answer is that you can't lose weight if you're not motivated by a reason for wanting to lose the weight. But it doesn't stop there. There are two types of motivation-autonomous and controlled. Autonomous naturally kicks in to make us do certain things, and controlled motivation is that which we use to make ourselves do certain things. Researchers have found that those with autonomous motivation four weeks after a new diet regime are more likely to stick to their weight loss plan. The more motivated a person feels...

Shape-Up Flip Flops and Other Weight Loss Summer Shoes

I will admit that I've never put on a pair of Shape-ups, the Skechers brand sneakers that boast to help you tone your legs and buttocks with every single step because of the unique rounded-bottom shape of the shoe. But, I will, someday, at least put them on to take a walk around the store and see what they feel like. Lately, I've been hearing rumors about the new Shape-up style flip flops that are growing in popularity this summer and thought I should check them out (and share them with you). Personally, I think these shoes are absolutely hideous, but if they...

Do workout videos work out?

Lately I've been thinking about trying out a workout DVD. I've never really believed much in home-workouts. For me, I don't think I could possibly burn as many calories in my living room as I can at the gym. I know many of you could probably prove me wrong on that one though. Still, as I am committed to dropping some weight, I'll try about anything that's easy, quick, and rewarding. One that I'm considering doing and have heard a lot of reviews about is Jillian Michael's 30-day Shred (if anyone of you are doing/have done/want to do the Shred and know...

Biggest Loser Recap!

SPOILER ALERT: If you read to the end, you will know who went home on this week's episode. While this week's episode was not much of a nail-biter the challenge certainly was interesting. The contestants were forced to build a ladder using wooden blocks in whatever style they would like to take them up to another ladder that they would have to climb to reach their respective flag. The block-building part didn't seem too difficult, but for me, the height of what they were climbing was pretty intense! Year after year, when the contestants are faced with these challenges, I'm amazed at their...

Health at the Ballpark

The time is here for baseball and some of you are looking forward to spending some time checking out your favorite teams at their baseball stadiums (not me, I've never been to a baseball game, nor do I have a favorite team.) Even if you're not into baseball, there might be some outdoor activity you are planning on attending that has some pretty unhealthy snacking options. But you don't have to snack unhealthily! Of course, the best option is to bring your own snacks, if possible. But of course, that is not always possible, whether it be that you don't have enough time...

Mood Foods

You've heard of mood rings, but have you heard of mood foods? Some foods can have an affect on our moods. In other words, a good mood food puts us in a good mood, making us feel cheerful and happy while a bad mood food makes us feel sad and down. Surprisingly, mood foods don't include cookies, candies or cake. But are healthy foods instead, their mood improving vitamins and all natural ingredients. The No. 1 mood-improving food is actually bananas according to this MSN article. Bananas have a combination of vitamins, potassium, tryptophan (the ingredient in turkey that makes us want to...

Hypnosis and Your Health

I may have blogged about this before, but I don't believe I got the responses I was looking for, so I thought I would bring it up again. I've never participated in any form of hypnosis. But some claim you can be hypnotized into losing weight. By resetting your mind, the idea is, you're able to jolt your body into losing more weight quicker. Hypnosis claims to be powerful in helping people stick to their diets and provide motivation to keep them exercising. I'm not sure how it works, but I'm also not sure if it works. Have you or someone you know...

Biggest Loser: Does Debt Make You Fat?

On tonight's Biggest Loser, financial expert Suze Orman met with the contestants to talk about debt, and how it affects their weight loss. Wait. Debt affects weight loss? Does it? I'm not exactly sure. Her argument, mostly, was that people in control of their finances are more likely to be in control of their weight. She examined every contestants credit report and ranked who would be most likely to win the contest/show based on their credit scores (which I think is a little bit ridiculous). However, last season, she apparently guessed right when she guessed Danny Cahill, who admittedly was $45,000 in credit...

Should You Go On a Weight Loss Retreat?

You may have seen weight loss retreat getaways advertised on television or heard about them in a magazine. A weight loss retreat is a place (like a ranch) where you can go away for a little while, eat healthy, work out and drop some pounds. But not all weight loss retreats are created equal. If you're thinking about going on a weight loss retreat, there ae a few things to consider. 1.) What do you want to achieve during the retreat? Consider what you want to achieve while you're away that you cannot achieve at home. If you think you will get the same experience...

Would You Donate Your Skin?

You've may have heard of "Locks of Love?" Well I'm calling this "Lots of Love." A clinic in New Jersey is asking people who have lost weight and who have undergone surgery to remove their excess skin to donate their skin to a unique skin donation program-the first of its kind in the country. The skin is then used for a variety of medical purposes, including treating burn victims. Typically, skin is taken from the deceased according to the article below, but for some more intensive surgeries, a larger amount of skin from a live patient is preferred. I have thought about skin donation...

The Scale: Friend or Foe?

For the longest time, I've thought that if I don't look at the scale, the numbers won't creep up on me. I've considered the scale my enemy, wanting nothing to do with it. But maybe the scale is not the enemy. Maybe I am my own worst enemy. This article talks about the benefits of the scale and why we should consider it helpful and not hurtful. For one, the article suggests, weighing yourself more often makes you more aware of your weight and what you are gaining with the foods you eat. The more you know, the more you lose, essentially is...

Hold the fat on my fish!

It's finally starting to feel like summer's right around the corner. And with the warmer weather, I'm looking forward to some lighter cooking. In my house, we've been trying to cook more and more fish as it is a healthy dinner option with many varieties. I haven't tried all those varieties yet (we almost always end up getting salmon, which I'm starting to get a little sick of) but I hope to learn how to cook more fish. Here are some healthy low-fat fish dishes that you can cook at home. They range in difficulty, but all look and sound like they...

Easter Candies to Avoid

Good morning, and Happy Easter to all who celebrate! Whether you celebrate it or not, Easter candy is all around, and with that comes some serious temptations! But not all Easter candy is created equal, and for the purposes of our weight loss journeys there are some that should be avoided. At the top of the list for Easter candies to avoid is an all-time favorite-Peeps. These babies are loaded with sugar (8 grams each) and four bunnies equals 130 calories. Following closely behind are * Jelly Beans- 140 calories for a 35-bean serving, 37 grams of sugar * Cadbury chocolate eggs- serving of 12...

Burning More Calories Instead of Burning Out

Within minutes of me starting a cardio routine, I can't wait for it to end. I know it's the wrong attitude to have when I'm starting a heart-pumping calorie-burning exercise. But I have it often. And then I truck through, and work as hard as I can for weeks and weeks, and then something just happens and I just don't have it in me anymore. Burn outs happen to most of us, especially when we over stress our bodies. According to this article, the burnouts happen in four stages. http://health.msn.com/fitness/womens-fitness/articlepage.aspx?cp-documentid=100254304 The first stage, or as they call it "the honeymoon" is when we have...

Fighting Your Weight Loss Demons

We all use crutches to get us through our weight loss journeys. One good crutch for many is faith. Faith makes us hopeful for what is to come in our future and gets us through the hard times. It is also what we usually thank when things are going well. Sue Davis, author of a new book, "Fighting Diet Demons: Journal" lays out a new diet path for her readers entirely based on spirituality, meditation and most importantly faith http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/weight-loss-through-faith-fighting-dieting-demons-89675057.html This second book in her three-part series does not encourage or discourage any particular diet plan, but helps the readers determine what it is...
