Happy Halloween!

I just wanted to wish everyone a Happy Halloween! Halloween is my favorite holiday-and one that, more than many other holidays, reminds me to stick with my weight loss goals, for two reasons. One, because I am surrounded by temptations-everything from the candy I'm passing out to trick-or-treaters, to the snacks that are lying around the house. And two, because next year, I want to be able to fit into a sexier costume :) I've already strayed a little bit with my diet this Halloween after choosing an awful seat next to the food/snack table at a party last night (yes, it...

NASA scientist proves cold helps you lose weight

Every morning when I drive by as the weather is beginning to get colder, I see some dedicated runners in their under armor, facing the early morning chill to work out. And soon (ugh) it will be winter, and I know they will still be out there. Personally, I find it hard to do as much as take my hands out of the blanket long enough to type this blog post when it is cold. But today, a former NASA scientist proved that the cold is actually helpful when trying to lose weight. Ray Cronise, founder of Zero G Corp. and...

Parental Weight Loss Classes Help Kids

A new study suggests that educational programs about dieting, exercise and weight loss can be just as effective in curbing childhood obesity as classes that involve both the children and the parents. To me, this makes a little bit of sense as I can't really imagine children being as interested as the parents are in learning about how to avoid childhood obesity. According to the study, which was conducted by Kerri N. Boutelle, associate professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at the University of California, the study examined 80 families with obese or overweight children between ages 8 and 12 and divided the...

Healthy Halloween (No Trick) Treats!

Are you starting to feel the temptation of all the Halloween treats? I know I sure am. But then again, I started to feel the temptation a month ago when apple cider donuts started hitting the streets (or apple orchards) all around me. Halloween has always been my favorite holiday of all time. I'm not sure if it's the excitement of being something/someone I'm not for a day, or the spooky nature (I love all things scary). Or maybe it's all the SWEET treats. But as someone trying to lose weight, Halloween can be, well, a nightmare :) Halloween is easily one of...

Is Being a Busy Bee Helping me Lose Weight?

The past several weeks, I've been quite a busy bee. I've been balancing a few part-time jobs, spent some time doing some volunteer work for the American Heart Association and trying to establish a new, consistent routine at the gym. While rushing from point A to point B, I've made a conscious effort to eat healthier and prioritize exercise, though the exercise part has had to take a backseat on 3 out of 7 days last week simply because there weren't enough hours in the day. What I've found to be most interesting is that I think that the busier I am,...

The Lowest Calorie Fruits and Veggies

My last blog post had 87 viewers! I think that may be an all-time high for a post that was only up on the main page for two days! I guess a lot of you are interested in whether it is more important to burn fat first, build muscle first, or do both at the same time. Well, this post is about dieting, which is about consuming less fat, which in turn leads to burning more fat. We know "an apple a day keeps the doctor away," and several of the popular diets many of us have tried, including Weight Watchers,...

To Build Muscle or Burn Fat?

I'm about to head to my local Gold's gym for some "Body Flow." For those of you who aren't familiar with Gold's and its classes, Body Flow is a blend of Yoga and Pilates. I like the class because it's actually pretty challenging-it's the only Pilates style class I've ever broke a sweat in actually. The intense stretches and deep movements wear me out for some reason. But as I'm trying to establish a routine, I find myself wondering if I should be focusing more on burning fat than building muscle, both at the same time, or what? Whenever I'm doing an...

You Are What You Drink

Many times, we think what we eat can make us fat, but don't take the time to stop and smell the air about what we're drinking. Simply adding a regular soda to your meal adds another 100-175 calories. And if you're drinking alcohol-forget about it! The truth is that one alcoholic drink can have crazy calories that you would not even imagine. That being said, you do not have to sacrifice alcohol entirely in order to lose weight (though it would definitely help). The trick is making smarter choices about what you are drinking. For instance, a margarita has 550 calories-why...

Snooki offered to endorse weight loss product

Whether you love her (or the show) or hate her, her name is sweeping the country. Snooki and a few other cast members of Jersey Shore have, for reasons completely beyond me, become a national phenomenon. So, it's only natural that a company offers her an endorsement, but what's of particular interest is that it is a weight loss company and they won't just let her endorse the product as she is. According to the New York Post, AcaiSupply.com is in the process of offering Snooki the endorsement because she could "stand to shed a few pounds," according to the Post. Of...

Why I hate The Biggest Loser's Cupcake Challenge

I cannot seem to understand why The Biggest Loser thinks it’s a good “challenge” to force the contestants to eat cupcakes so that they have an advantage at the weigh-ins later in the week. I understand that the show is a “competition,” but why would a show about weight loss and pushing yourself to reach your goals promote this type of activity? Probably because, as I said, it is a competition....

The fire's out for pepper weight loss suplement

I've heard of "burning fat," but definitely not in this sense of the word. Reuters reported today that a weight loss supplement that utilizes hot chili peppers may not prove as effective as it preaches for burning off fat. According to Reuters, the active ingredient, or chemical, that is in the chili peppers is not as effective as the manufacturer of the product preaches, despite what the Japanese company that produces the product says. The maker claims the supplement does a great job of burning calories, but researches cannot find significant evidence to back this up. (I CAN imagine a lot of evidence...

Shout it Out!

Last week, I was watching The View and took particular interest in a Suze Oreman interview about debt. Suze was giving the audience tips for how to get out of debt as quickly and efficiently as possible. One of her tips that interested me most was that if you have debt, you should tell everyone you know that you're in debt so that they are not only conscious of your situation, but make an effort to help by not persuading you to participate in costly activities, such as going out to dinner, movies, shopping, etc. Today, I read an article that's...

Fighting Past the Excuses

Today, I was getting ready to go somewhere for the day, and I had a few extra minutes in the morning and decided to pack a gym bag. I wasn't sure if I was necessarily use what I packed inside, but I hoped, by the end of the day, I'd find the motivation to make it to the gym. For several weeks now I've been putting off working out due to a nasty a cold (which still has me sniffling and coughing), some really yucky weather, and general overall business. But at the same time, each passing day I did not...

Sticks and Stones

Many of us go to doctors expecting to receive advice on how to live our lives in a healthy manner. And while we usually do get good advice, sometimes the delivery of the advice can actually be damaging. For instance, when a doctor tells us that we need to lose weight, the tone of how they tell us to endure such a task can actually make a difference on how easily we get our weight loss started, according to a new study by the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. According to the research, if a doctor suggests we lose weight in a...

Want to Lose Fat? Gain Sleep!

A new study suggests that sleep loss can negatively effect the amount of fat a person loses. Sleep, as you know, can have great effects on our healthy and all over our bodies, but now, researchers are saying there may be a direct correlation between how much shut eye you get and how much fat you lose. What's important to note is that the actual weight loss showed little difference between those who slept more and those who didn't, but the composition of where they lost the weight and how more fat was burned was what was found. The findings were...

How do You Keep Up With Your Weight Loss When You Catch a Cold?

I was chatting with a fellow Buddy last night about how I am in the tail-end of a pretty nasty cold, and that I've had a hard time keeping up with my weight loss over the past week and a half as my symptoms have gone from so-so to bad  to better. The Buddy said that they were also getting over a cold, but that they had lost some extra weight this week in their illness. Getting a cold always confuses me, and my weight loss efforts. On the one hand, I definitely eat less when I have a cold because 1.)...
