Feeling Icky

I'm feeling pretty icky this week. I feel like try as I may, I just have not been eating healthy and have NOT been exercising at all. With each unhealthy thing I eat, I feel ickier, but yet I still eat it. Perhaps I need to surround myself with some less icky foods. This week I've been in pseudo-transition, moving from an apartment, and switching jobs. I have been attributing my bad behavior to these circumstances, and still am sticking by it. It seems near-impossible to worry about what you're eating and your wait when you're turning your whole life around. Yet,...

Protein All the Buzz in Weight Loss World

It seems as though people are not only thinking about where to score the best deals this Black Friday. The buzz in the weight loss world is about the benefit of protein in aiding weight loss efforts. According to several sources today, an increased consumption of protein, and decrease of carbohydrate increase, can significantly help a person lose weight. This really isn't "news," persay, and to many people it seems fairly obvious. However, researchers' newest method of discovering this is new. in what some researchers are calling "the largest" diet study, 772 families were studied, with the adults following low-fat diet plans....

I'm Thankful for My Buddies!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Thanksgiving, unfortunately for my diet, is my absolute second favorite holiday-second only to Halloween (shocker: both my favorite holidays involve lots of food and sweets). Thanksgiving, though, is actually the best day every year for my weight loss goals. After the turkey coma has passed and the mashed potatoes and stuffing are sitting in the bottom of my belly like a bag of rocks, I start to think about what I've eaten over the past year, how I could have eaten better and what I want to change by next Thanksgiving. It's almost like a dieting day of reflection for me....

The Pricetag of Weight Loss

All of us on here know that weight loss is really priceless. It's priceless in the sense that the feeling we have when we achieve it is nothing we could put an actual price tag on. And likewise, actually, physically losing weight naturally does not cost any money. But what does cost money are all the various tools and devices and memberships we use to help us reach those goals. According to this interesting article, the weight loss product market is expected to reach $134 billion. In 2009, the weight loss market reached $121 billion and, according to the BBC, the amount is...

Healthi(er) Thanksgiving Recipes

Gobble, gobble friends. Thanksgiving is just about among us, and if you're anything like me, you're thinking "man, there is going to be so much delicious food put in front of me this week." While I of course am incredibly excited for the food, I'm also dreading it. It's really hard not to think about your weight, or weight loss, during a holiday like Thanksgiving. My weakness, personally, is the stuffing and mashed sweet potatoes. I could probably live the rest of my life without turkey, although that's really not the most fattening element of most Thanksgivings anyway. I wanted to give you...

'Obese' contestant hospitalized for dehydration

New York Daily News reported today that LaRhonda Darby, a contestant on Obese, the ABC reality show about weight loss, had to be hospitalized for dehydration. According to the newspaper, Darby, 25, was taking prescription diuertics, but began feeling lightheaded and having cramps in her legs on Saturday before her sister-in-law called 9-1-1 and Darby ended up in an Oklahoma City hospital. Obese is scheduled to air next year. This is definitely not the first time a contestant on a reality show about weight loss has had to be hospitalized for similar conditions. In practically every single season of The Biggest Loser,...

Help! I need a good home workout!

I am moving this weekend, and while excited, I'm actually moving very close to my hometown. While I'm not thrilled about this, being close to where you grew up does have its perks. For example, I know where everything is. Especially all the gyms. I'm in kind of a pickle about where to workout still, though. I am getting married in less than a year (wow! feels weird to say that), so it really is crunch time for me to lose the weight I want to lose, and still have time to maintain the loss for a few months and enjoy...

Bad Influences

I often think about, and have blogged about, how working out and exercising with friends ( or Buddies ;) ) can be helpful and motivational. Having someone to go the distance with you can certainly make weight loss easier, and having support helps when your friend/friends encourage your get-togethers to not involve unhealthy eating and fattening activities. For these reasons, I consider friends to mostly be good influences (usually). But this week, I've been thinking about bad influences, and how I can better avoid them. For starters, identifying the bad influences helps you to be more aware of what you need...

Can texting help you lose weight?

A San Diegan (San Diego) company is experimenting with a new weight loss program that involves text messaging a person inspirational messages to help them lose weight. A two-month study was conducted where subjects were sent four text messages a day, specific to their diet, exercise or activity levels. Some of the text messages even required a response. Several people involved in the study said they lost up to 15 lbs., and that the text messages did help them reach their goals. Here is a link to the local news article about the study: http://www.10news.com/news/25778817/detail.html The director of the study had an...

My Favorite New Exercise Game

Who says video games are for couch potatoes? As I've seen on many of you Buddies' profiles, many of us have Wii video game systems, and use them to help us lose weight. I have a Wii Fit at home, and, shamefully, do not utilize the great fitness/weight loss tools it provides half as much as I should. In fact, I don't even think I've turned the Fit on since April. For those of you who don't have one, the Wii Fit comes with several games that are designed to help you stretch and tone your body, work on balance, and even...

The Junk Food Diet!?

You've heard of the Ice Cube Diet, and even the Cookie Diet. Well, now there's apparently a Twinkie diet. Nutrition Professor Mark Haub is claiming that he lost weight after 10 weeks of eating nothing but Twinkies, Doritos, powdered donuts, Oreo cookies and other junk food items. He's calling this highly un-nutritious diet the Convenience Store Diet apparently. Haub may have eaten some of the more unhealthy food on the map, but what's important to note is that he did count all of his calories. In fact, Haub told CNN that calorie counting is the single most important thing when it comes...

An Interesting Take on Dieting

We're all entitled to our own opinion. But I thought my Buddies may get a kick out of this opinion. According to Zoe Harcombe, labeled a "controversial nutritionist" by the New York Post, when we began to get concerned about our weight and started dieting and doing vigorous exercise in the 1970's, that's when the obesity epidemic in America really began. Prior to this time, Harcombe said, Americans weren't afraid of eating red meat, eggs, cream and butter. Now, we have all kinds of alternatives (one of my fave butter alternatives is Smart Balance). I have thought about this, in some...

Celebrity Weight Loss in the News

This week's tabloids are booming with news about celebrity weight loss. This is not entirely surprising, as most tabloid magazines feature at least a story or two about a star's "trials and tribulations" with weight loss, and how they've worked so gosh darned hard (aka hired a personal trainer for an exorbitant amount of money), to lose the weight. But this week's tabloid weight loss news was of a sadder nature. Disney star Demi Lovato hit the media pages after confessing to suffering from eating disorders and Portia De Rossi discussing publicly how she used to limit herself to only 300...

Online Encouragement Aids in Weight Loss

As if us Buddies didn't all know this already, a new study suggests that online messages of encouragement can actually go a long way in helping people lose weight. The study, which is published in the American Journal of Public Health, examined a group of 179 people with an average Body Mass Index (BMI) of 34, or obese. The volunteers were participating in an annual 12-week online weight loss program in Rhode Island. Participants were separated into two groups: one group was offered computer generated feedback on their weight loss efforts, while the other group was not. Both groups were given several...

Election Day/Weight Loss Announcements

Happy Election Day everyone! Isn't it strange how election day happens so close to Halloween? I feel like I was just wishing everyone a Happy Halloween and suggesting some healthy snacks. Unfortunately, I do not have an healthy Election Day snack suggestions....I guess you could be scheduling healthy meals around the time you plan to head to the polls though, right? I wanted to let all you Biggest Loser fans out there know that tonight's episode will be cut short to only one hour, airing at 8 p.m. to make room for an NBC election special. So sad, right. Personally, I have to...
