I Resolve

I resolve to lose weight in 2011. Yea, right. So does everyone else. We can all sit here on New Year's Eve, making promises to ourselves and our friends that THIS will be the year that we get it done, but until we resolve to change our behaviors, we can't necessarily resolve an outcome. What I mean is, this year, I'm resolving NOT to resolve to lose weight, and instead, resolving to do some things differently so that I  can get to the ultimate goal of losing about 20 more lbs. The first thing I resolve is to hold myself more accountable...

Do Food Delivery Programs Help With Weight Loss?

Food delivery systems have been around for many years now, and are not wavering at all in popularity. It's funny-food is one of the few things to be delivered by mail still (get it...with mail moving more and more to e-mail...lame joke? Maybe). However, I actually don't know the answer to question I pose in the headline of this blog entry. I can only speculate on my own thoughts on the subject. I've never used a food delivery program, but have actually heard a lot of good things. Mainly, I know people who have used the Weight Watchers food delivery program, and...

How to Lose Weight When You're Snowed In

If you live in the Northeast, you're probably stuck in your home, as you have been for many hours, thinking about when you are going to be able to get out of there and get to the gym. I actually drove past two individual brave enough to go for a run in the blizzard on a major roadway this morning. The worst thing about a huge snow storm like this is you feel like you're going to be stuck in your house, just eating away, not being able to exercise for days. But even though you may not be able to...

The Faster You Run, The More Weight You Lose

This may seem a little obvious, but maybe not. In fact, I have been told several times that actually running for a little while, and then slowing down, and then running again helps you burn more calories. But despite what I was told, a new study shows that the faster you run, the more you weight you lose. The study actually determined the flip-side: that runners who lose more weight during a marathon end up running the fastest. In the study, researchers examined 643 runners in the Mont Saint Michel Marathon in France in 2009. They had the runners drink either...

Should Regular Soda Be Taxed?

This topic is a hot one, and one that's sweeping the country. I know in New York, a tax on regular soda was passed last year, and although I heard little backlash myself from soda drinkers, mainly because I don't know a lot of people who drink regular soda. But I did see a lot of commercials from the soda manufacturers arguing against the tax. Their argument, actually did not concretely say that taxing regular soda decreases their business, but instead, they focused on how no one, especially not government, should tell people what to eat or drink. I tend to agree...

Middle Aged Women Have Harder Time Gaining Weight

Hot off the Huffington Post, a new study found that middle-aged women actually have a harder time gaining weight than middle-aged men. The part of the study that was of most interest to the researchers was the fact that not age, but gender made a difference in how middle-aged individuals gain and are able to lose weight. Those women who live healthy lives, engaging in vigorous activity most days of the week will have an even harder time gaining weight, the study said. About 1,800 women and 1,700 men were studied. While middle-aged men who live equally active lives will also have a...

'Biggest Loser' Winner Loses 181 Lbs.

I'm a couple days late on this, but it's all the buzz in the entertainment world. Twenty-eight-year-old Patrick House was crowned this season's Biggest Loser on Tuesday. House is from Vicksburg, Mississippi and lost 181 lbs. to become the season 10 winner. Previously, he weighed over 400 lbs. Coming in second place was Alfredo Dintin, who lost 162 lbs. and Ada Wong, who lost 99 lbs. Year after year, I am amazed at just how much weight human beings can lose, and in such a short time. The emotions that spill from the contestants throughout the season is heartbreaking, but the emotions...

Holiday Health Tips

'Tis the season for holiday parties and temptations. I know I've already been to a few holiday get-togethers in the past few weeks and have desperately trained to be healthy and a "good girl" (or day I say, the opposite of naughty-nice?) so as to remain on track to reach my weight loss goals. The following are a few holiday health tips I have for keeping on track and with your goals, despite all the holiday glitz and glam. 1. AVOID THE EGGNOG Unless you find some magical version of eggnog that is less than half the fat, stay away! Most people drink eggnog...

Sometimes It Takes a Mirror (or a photo...or video)

I've been working on my weight loss for sometime now. But I'm not sure whether I've been working hard or hardly working. Now it's "crunch time" before my wedding. Well, still no, I'm getting married in a year, but I still want to give myself some time in between having lost the weight and my wedding just in case something happens that I gain some back and need to lose it again. I know this isn't the best attitude, but now is the time to be prepared. By my calculations, I think it will take me at least four months to lose...

Think Healthy and You'll be Healthy

When I'm driving in my car, headed home or to a specific destination, sometimes something awful happens. I think about a particular food. And when I have just one itty bitty thought about that food, my thoughts begin to grow, to the point where I feel like I can't imagine life going on unless I'm able to eat that food. Well, I may be exaggerating a little, but I know I'm not the only one who feels entirely consumed by their thoughts when those thoughts happen to be about a particular food. I mostly have these thoughts about chocolate, and oftentimes, strangely,...

Is Your Diet Dangerous?

When choosing a diet, we know there are going to have to be some things we sacrifice, whether it be certain foods, or eating whole large portions of our foods. But sometimes, when we sacrifice too much, diets can be dangerous. This photo-article by the Huffington post caught my attention, because I know I've heard of diets being dangerous before. Take for example the Atkins diet. While cutting carbs can seem to make sense as far as losing weight, some people need those carbs for their own particular bodies. Now, I don't disagree with all the "dangerous diets" described in this article. One...

We Can Do It!

Americans always get a bad rap for our high obesity rates, the unhealthy food that has plagued our society and for being "lazy." But a new international study found that Americans actually do a great job at losing weight and keeping it off long-term. The study examined just over 14,000 people who had previously been obese or overweight. Interestingly, of these people, 36.5% was able to keep off at least 5% of their body weight for a year or more; more than 17% was able to keep at least 10% of their body weight off; 8.5% kept off at least 15% of...

Can Pee Help You Lose Weight?

I probably should have used the word "urine" in the headline, but I was going for shock-value, because when I stumbled upon this article, that's what I was: SHOCKED. The article (link below), is about how some people are trying a rather interesting method in order to lose weight by injecting themselves with the urine of a pregnant woman. Apparently, pregnant peepee has magical powers, and people have claimed that they've lost up to one lb. per day as a result of the injections. But No.1 doesn't come so cheap. The urine injections can cost between $300 and over $500 for a...

Lap-Band Weight Loss Surgery Seeks Additional FDA Approval

The makers of Lap-Band surgery, a weight loss surgery that is given to individuals classified as morbidly obese that involves making a person's stomach smaller, is seeking further FDA approval now to be able to be used in individuals with lower BMIs than previously needed. Currently, the Federal Drug Administration has only approved the surgery for individuals at least 100 lbs. overweight. But now, that 100 lbs. is too much, and the manufacturers of the equipment for the surgery would like to see the number lowered. During the surgery, which was originally approved in 2001, an adjustable, inflatable band is placed around...
