Gearing Up For Spring

Well, buddies, can you believe March starts this week? I know I cannot. With the warm weather means lots more opportunities to exercise outside. It also means a lot more arm-bearing, which I know I'm not entirely comfortable with at the moment. The thing about outside exercise, though, is that it is mostly geared toward cardio and/or your legs. Truth be told, I guess spring is also a time when the legs come out for some, but I've never really been one for shorts and short skirts. My point is, if we want to tone the arms, we're probably going to have to...

Prison Sisters Must Lose Weight

Now here's an interesting story. A pair of sisters were released from a Mississippi prison this week on the condition that they both lose weight so that one could donate their kidney to the other one. Since they are both currently overweight, they have been advised by their doctors that in order for the procedures to go smoothly, they must each lose a significant amount of weight (one sister has to lose 40 lbs., while the other sister has been instructed to lose 100 lbs.). Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour gave the women one year to lose the weight and complete the surgery. Personally,...

Seven Hours of Sleep is Best for Weight Loss

We all know sleep is important-for various aspects of living a healthy life. But especially weight loss, which should be of no shock to you. Today was living proof of this for me. I went to sleep around 2 a.m. and my natural alarm clock woke me up at 7:30 a.m. today, as it does everyday. Throughout the morning, I felt seemingly groggy and by 11 a.m., after sitting on the couch for what I expected to be only a few minutes, I was out cold for about two hours. By the time I woke up, I sure did have time to...

Jennifer Hudson a Huge Inspiration

If you watched the Grammys, or better yet, any of the shows in which they talk about the Grammys, you'd know there was a lot to talk about, from strange performances (Lady Gaga) to interesting enterances (Lady Gaga). But one thing a lot of people were talking about after Sunday night was how amazing Jennifer Hudson looked-and I have to say that I agree. From the outfit she was wearing when she entered on the red carpet to the black pants outfit she wore when she joined the other ladies for the Aretha Franklin tribute, J-Hud looked absolutely breathtaking, and the whole...

Vitamuffins are Full of Vitamins

First, Happy Valentine's Day to all you buddies out there! I hope you all had a love-filled day (and received more flowers than chocolates) and got to spend it with someone special. Valentine's Day is another holiday that heavily encourages eating, whether it is dining out for a nice meal or eating chocolates that come in a heart-shaped box. If you're a chocolate lover, like me, then you may be feeling a little bad about how many chocolates you ate yesterday. But I've found a solution to cure chocolate cravings year-round and leave you feeling guilt-free. Vitamuffins deep chocolate muffins. Now, I'm not...

New Weight Loss Gadget

I love when a new weight loss gadget comes out, mostly because I get to share it with you guys. This latest gadget is an armband called the BodyMediaFit. Here is a recent news article about the product, but essentially, it appears to do the same thing as the BodyBugg and other calorie-monitoring devices. This new device can actually measure the amount of calories you are burning while you sleep (who would want to wear this contraption while they sleep?) which would kind of be cool to do just once out of curiosity. I don't have any of these little devices, namely because...

Juggling a Diet and a Busy Day

I've had a serious problem lately keeping up with my diet and my calendar at the same time. My job requires me to be out of the house at strange hours-namely the hours most people are preparing dinner...or lunch (I'm usually home for breakfast). This can be a real problem, because, as I'm sure some of you know, when you're really hungry, and you're out and about, there are not many quick fix healthy options. Sometimes my problem is deeper than this even. I will literally forget to eat dinner at "dinnertime" and then head out to a night meeting, and by...

When Weight Prevents You From Life

Do you guys remember when the actor Kevin Smith was kicked off an airplane for being too overweight? If you don't you can see that article here, but essentially, he was told that the passenger who would be forced to sit next to him on the plane would not have fit comfortably due to Smith's weight, and Smith was asked to de-board the plane. Since then, Smith, has reportedly lost 65 lbs (of course with some questioning how healthy his methods for losing weight have been). I could probably blog about that one topic until I'm blue in the face, but I...

Shake Your Protein

There are lots of protein shakes on the market these days for those who are health conscious or looking to lose weight. I've tried a few of these shakes myself actually, and have to say, they're not all as bad (taste wise) as you'd think. But the question is: are they as healthy as you think? Naked makes a health/protein shake that tastes a little chalky, but once you get past that, it's actually quite good. Naked, for anyone who thinks I'm writing something perverted, is a brand of juice drinks that boasts to have pure, "naked" fruits as the main...

Should You Throw Out Food

I've seen on a lot shows lately people throwing food in the garbage to become healthy. The idea is, if it's not in the house, it is not a temptation and no one will eat it and get fatter. I saw this on "I Used to Be Fat," on MTV and on "Keeping Up With the Kardashians." I'm sure it also happens on other weight loss reality shows though. When they show the people throwing the food out, they typically go over the unhealthy foods that were being eaten and what that one, individual person, should not eat. But what they do...

How Your Tonsils Affect Your Weight

I read a Reuters article that was beyond stupid about how children who have their tonsils removed are more likely to be obese. The rationale behind the article is so obvious it is offensive: if you have painful, swollen tonsils, you are likely to eat less because it hurts on the way down. If you have your tonsils removed, you can then eat normally, which could potentially mean you eat more food, which could mean you could become overweight. Duh. The article goes as far as to suggest that if you do not want your child to be at risk of being overweight...
