Vegan, Vegetarain and Inbetween

Chances are pretty good that you know someone who's a vegetarian.   Do you know what sort of vegetarian they are?  I ask because it's been my experience that it isn't always as straight forward as one might think.  At one time I thought that a Vegetarian was someone who only ate vegetables.  Ha! Was I wrong!  Vegan is the strictest of all vegetarians because they only eat plant products.  I have also found that many vegans consider their diet just a part of their lifestyle.  Some vegans will also avoid using any animal products.  I respect someone who stands by...

Pushup Challenge

To me the pushup it the ultimate exercise. My introduction to the push up started as a child.  My dad was not only a young dad but he had also been in the military.  There would come those evenings when my brothers and I would be playing in the living room and dad came in to ask if anyone would sit on his back while he did some pushups.  Yes, I was daddy's girl and would hop right on.  He wowed us with one arm pushups along with a few other variations.   When I hit my teenage years...

The Tomato

Is it a fruit or a vegetable?  I personally have always thought of it a vegetable but somewhere lurking in the back of my mind I had that bit of information that it is really a fruit.  Technically the tomato is a fruit.  The United States Supreme court in 1893 ruled that tomato is a vegetable.  Back in the late 1800's there was a tariff that imposed a duty on vegetables but not fruits.  The court ruled on this matter but only for the purposes of this law.  The real question here is why should you care?  Actually there really...

A Very Veggie World

Eating a variety of vegetables is so healthy.  Did you know that you can tell what health benefits you can get from specific vegetables by color? Red fruits and vegetables are colored by natural plant pigments called "lycopene" or "anthocyanins." Lycopene in tomatoes, watermelon and pink grapefruit, for example, may help reduce risk of several types of cancer, especially prostate cancer. Lycopene in foods containing cooked tomatoes, such as spaghetti sauce, and a small amount of fat are absorbed better than lycopene from raw tomatoes. Orange/yellow fruits and vegetables are usually colored by natural plant pigments called "carotenoids." Beta-carotene in sweet potatoes,...

Food Storage Guide

Today I finally had a chance to sit down with a hot cup of tea and flip though a magazine.  There I was in my favorite spot when lo and behold a pull out caught my attention.  It was entitled the Ultimate Food Storage Guide.  I'm not sure I'd call it the Ultimate but it was pretty darn close. The first tip that just jumped out at me was to keep meat and poultry in the original store packaging in the refrigerator.  If your going to freeze it, just slip the package into a freezer bag Do you do that?   I...

Stay At Home Dieters

Those of you who work from home or are stay-at-home Moms/Dads  face different challenges from our work outside of the home counter parts.  I think the #1 issue is that we are moments away from the kitchen. It's important to have a few strategies in place.  Being at home means that you need to have discipline.     Here are a few strategies that have worked for me: 1.  Close the kitchen between meals -  When a meal is over I make sure the dishes are done and the counters are wiped down.  I might have a cup of tea or refill...

Feng Shui To Lose Weight

If placing a vase filled with flowers in the center of my kitchen table means I'll lose an extra pound this week I'm all for it.  Besides, I like flowers and I love the way my kitchen smells and feels with them placed there.   It sounds almost too good to be true.  What I'm talking about it Feng Shui.  Feng Shui is the Chinese belief that how items are placed and arranged within your environment has a direct impact on your life.   It doesn't stop with the placement of items the colors and elements also matter.  Chi is the life...

Are You Moving Enough

There are guidelines as to how much you should be moving to maintain your health.   Sometimes, I find this a difficult topic to address.  I know there are people out there who have good reasons to not exercise.   Yet, there really isn't a good enough reason.   The health benefits are tremendous.   Physically active people have a lower risk of developing heart disease, preventing certain types of cancer and type 2 diabetes.  It improves your mood.  According to an article in Medical News Today exercise improves your confidence and helps you lose weight.  I'm not really seeing a down side to...
