Super Food Ideas

I am always coming across lists of super foods these days.  Nearly every magazine has one.  Since the time we were small our moms were telling us to eat our vegetables and fruits which were good for us.   Sso many of us have grown into adults that really don't eat our vegetables.  It would be arrogant of me to think that after reading my list you’re going to change.  We have to eat, we have no choice.  Food is our fuel and we get to choose which fuel we are going to use.  You can pick from a list of...

Weight Loss Rebel

This week I was a weight loss rebel.  According to the Mayo Clinic and the Physical Activity Guideline for Americans I should be working out at least 30 minutes of moderate level intensity 5 times a week.  I know it and I’m sure most of you do also.  We are all aware that we should be working out often and varying between cardio, strength and flexibility.  Granted, there are no time guidelines for strength and flexibility but we know we should be doing it.  Moderate level exercise would be considered walking briskly, swimming and mowing the lawn.  Vigorous levels of...

Live chat is a great feature and if you haven’t participated in it your missing out.  The 3D chat rooms and avatars are fun to use.  To get started you'll want to click on the Live Chat tab at the top of your page.   The window that opens will show you links to get into the chat room to view the chat schedule and to schedule a chat. devore1217 has scheduled a chat for August 21st at 12:30 P.M.   Devore's topic is sharing tips and tricks on getting into the right mindset. Be sure to check it out! You can also schedule...

Vitamin D

There is so much controversial information about vitamins out there that it can be overwhelming at best.  The most important thing you can understand about vitamins is that some can cause as much harm as good.  You can divide vitamins into 2 groups, fat soluble and water soluble.  Fat soluble means that that particular vitamin can be stored in your liver and fatty tissue.  Your body takes what it needs, stores the rest and it is released from your body at a slow rate.  Water soluble means that your body takes what it needs and then the rest leaves.  It’s...

Go for a Walk

If you have been reading my blogs you know by now I love win/win scenarios.  Walking is one of them.   Walking engages your entire body.   The benefits are extraordinary.   It fits ANY fitness level and the cost is minimal.   The benefits of walking aren't only physical.  Studies have shown that walking 30 minutes a day boosted moods in depressed patients faster than medication.  Another study showed that the more steps people took during the day, the better their moods were. Walking lowers Alzheimer's risk, improves sleep, slows mental decline and is a form of meditation.  When you go for a walk...

Meal Planning

Planning is a vital part of being able to eat healthy on a budget.  This topic can easily be added to our Eating Healthy on a Budget series of blogs.  I haven't been able to find a lot of information out there that addresses this topic from a realistic point of view.  I know that beans, rice and pasta are inexpensive but they are also high in calories.   We want to eat healthy, stick to our budget and still be able lose weight.  I understand planning can be difficult, and time consuming, but it's going to make a huge difference. ...

Super Foods

There are so many fantastic foods for you it's hard to pick what the cream of the crop is.  I came across this list from the Nutrition Action Newsletter and combined it with some nutritional facts from WHfoods.com.   By the time I was done I realized I had a great resource I wanted to share.   1. Sweet Potatoes  -  Easy to overlook because it's a starchy potato, but it shouldn't be.  By adding 3-5 grams of fat per meal it will increase our uptake of the beta-carotene found in this delicious and nutritionally high food.   They are high in vitamins...
